Samara, a young woman from London, visits Bran Castle in Romania during a Halloween night. Somehow, she's always felt drawn to the story of Vlad the Impaler, the historical character who allegedly inspired the writer, Bram Stoker, to write his Count Dracula. Annoyed by her noisy friends, she strolls behind her group when they enter the castle and thus gets approached by their tall dark and handsome guide. Samara can't fight the attraction she feels for him, even after he claims to be Vlad Dracul himself, obviously making fun of her...or? At the end of the tour, unable to resist her curiosity, she follows the guide through a dark corridor and time travels to another time, a late medieval world populated by very unusual vampires, where she had once belonged. The mysterious guide turns out to be her husband, none less than Vlad III, the Prince of Wallachia, the Impaler... Dracula. Samara's memories start to trickle back slowly, both good and bad. The man she loves so much that she feels overcome by her feelings for him is not exactly as he was when she left him before, when she... died. A lot of things have changed in her absence, in six hundred years. But she is changed too, having grown up in the 21st century this time around, she is not quite the same girl as when she lived in Vlad's castle, in the late medievals. Will the great love they feel for each other despite their long separation be strong enough to overcome all their differences? Based off of hotel Transylvania. Romance. Short Story. Book 1. The Count is the sequel to this story. - I tense up as Maven spins me around to face him. His eyes glistening with salty tears, or what I presume to be. Johnny stays hunched behind me, his shoulders shaking as he holds back his own tears. I stare at Maven, my heart felt like it was being crushed at the site of his broken expression. "Is it true? Are you a human?" I look down and sigh, the grayish pale makeup on my hands smeared showing my natural skin. "Yes." He sucks in a sharp breath as he places his hands gently on mine pulling them up between our bodies. "I don't care, I still wanna be with you." he lets go of one hand and cups my face in the other. I couldn't help but smile softly as his eyes lit up, a gentle loving smile on his face as he rubs a finger on my cheek. I look past him towards Dracula's fear filled eyes. I felt my throat close up when I realized what I had to do. I pull Maven's hand away from my face and release our laced fingers stepping back. I avert my eyes and glare at the ground. "I-I don't want to be with you. Because you're a blood sucking monster. I hate monsters." I seethe out, all the anger in my tone directed at myself. My heart in my throat when feel Johnny grab my wrist pulling me away from Maven, his eyes widen just slightly as a single tear drips down his pale face. "You don't mean that." he utters, his voice shaking. "Goodbye Maven." I force a stern tone to my voice as I don't spare him a glance, Johnny pulling me out of the ballroom. When the doors slam shut behind me I let my emotions go. I let out a sob that wracked my body in full tremors. The world is electrified. Everything runs on electricity, from lighting to transport, life support to social media. Oblivion. Then, grid is down. And the world turns dark. And doesn't turn back on. America, the most forward thinking and innovative Western idealist, has answers. Her feminist values push her neck to neck with her male peers. She is one of the first to figure out that the grid will eventually fail, because of the vein of fossil fuel instability, trying to raise the alarm. When the grid does fail, she doesn't even get the satisfaction to say 'I told you so' before she is forced to collaborate in the TROIKA - a trio of biologist, engineer, and geophysicist that must find an immediate and then long-term solution to power the earth. Oh, and she has no choice. USSR, a cynic planner and injured war veteran, has questions. Torn between his eastern roots and western intelligence, he struggles to fit in, curb his aggression, and deal with personal loss. Instead of notifying the world of the impending grid failure, he builds a vast arsenal nuclear plants to power his land against the rules, and when the grid falls, his lights and machines keep running.
