The fire alarm had been blaring for ten minutes before the building finally cleared, leaving Matthew Casey standing in the thick, acrid smoke of a half-collapsed apartment complex. He didn't notice the soot on his face, or the burns on his gloves. His mind wasn't on the fire-it never was when he was too busy thinking about her.
