Kyra possesses a special power, a healing power, that was a side effect of an experiment gone wrong. Haggar's experiment. If Haggar knew of her powers, and that she is a threat to Zarkons reign, she'd be eliminated.

The Galra kidnapped her from her home planet, and she became a prisoner of war. They wanted information and her families secret knowledge, but she never told. Eventually everyone forgot she even had hidden knowledge and she just became another prisoner.
