After being beaten for the first time in his life, his worldview was rocked, and after many months of trying to get back at Ryuji and the people closest to him, mostly to his own detriment and loss of people and things around him.
He was finally held accountable and about to be sent to prison after the tireless work of Ryuji, his friends, and Riven's own mother. But then, when he was recovering to be sentenced the next day, he was possessed by an unknown spirit that triggered smoke magic.
Causing him to kill his entire family in his sleep.

What if they just wanted to get revenge for Peter Pan taking their most valuable treasure, that meant more to them in the entire world, maybe that's why they had a growing vendetta over Peter Pan. There are many other reasons why villains did what they did, but, did these heroes ever consider that these villains had a family. Like how maybe Gaston might have had a kid who had to grow up with only one parent cause the Beast killed Gaston. Or maybe how Dr. Facilier might have had a daughter, but since he was locked in the shadow realm he never got to have that valuable father-daughter relationship with her. What if Disney is hiding something from us. The story of these kids who had to grow up without a parent or with the burden of being teased because of their lineage. Well, Disney, you may be good at making giant Marvel timelines and making us cry at the end of EVERY Disney Pixar movie. But I'm good at revealing your secrets.
