This can be read as a stand-alone book, though it is #2 in the history of the three books that dwell in this fantasy series. There are some spoilers for Ike Penworthy (book "1") in this book.
Cassria "Cass" Dome is special. She can touch the minds of animals. She can either listen through their ears and enjoy life through their eyes or she can control them for her own merriment. Normally she gives little tips and suggestions here and there, but when she's threatened and finds the strongest ally she can to protect herself, she did not expect to touch the mind of Seven, a morphkin: a human-animal shifter, and to strongly influence him until he is now a shadow in her life.
