Rose Crawley (née Carpenter) is a schoolteacher in Manchester, happily married to Matthew Crawley. Their fathers were doctors and close friends, and Rose and Matthew grew up side by side-only two years apart, Matthew born in 1885 and Rose in 1887.
By 1912, the couple live a comfortable, content life in Manchester. Matthew works as a solicitor, while their modest home is kept running smoothly with the help of a maid and a cook-though Rose's perfectly capable in the kitchen herself.
But when news breaks of the Titanic disaster, everything changes. Days later, a letter arrives informing Matthew that he is now heir to the vast Crawley estate. Overnight, Matthew and Rose-along with his mother, Isobel-are thrust into a world of titles, traditions, and expectations they neither understand nor fully accept.
Can love and integrity survive the weight of an unexpected inheritance and the scrutiny of the aristocracy?
