Court apothecary Maomao has always approached life with clinical detachment, until she unearths forgotten scrolls claiming romantic attraction is a classifiable medical condition with measurable symptoms. Intrigued, she begins secretly documenting the besotted court ladies who flutter around the gorgeous high-ranking official Jinshi. The problem is, her tidy scientific study gets messy when her own pulse starts racing for reasons that have nothing to do with medicine.

Struck between scholarly objectivity and increasingly personal observations, Maomao's research journal becomes more confessional than clinical as she struggles to categorize feelings that refuse to stay within neat diagnostic boxes.
