Long before the War of the Ring, when dragons still slept and dwarves dreamed of gold, there walked in the North a ranger known only as Strider. Few knew her name, and fewer still her blood.
Alysanne, daughter of Arathorn and Gilraen, has lived years in the wilds, guarding the borders of the North while hiding from the shadow of her own destiny. As the firstborn of Isildur's line, she is the true heir to the thrones of Gondor and Arnor - yet she believes herself unworthy of the crown that cost her ancestors their souls.
When Gandalf the Grey finds her among the lonely hills, he brings with him a summons she cannot ignore: a company of thirteen dwarves, a hobbit, and a quest to reclaim a stolen homeland. Reluctantly, Alysanne joins them, her path entwined with Thorin Oakenshield's - another heir burdened by pride and loss.
Through mountain storms, goblin tunnels, and dragon fire, Alysanne will be tested not only by sword and shadow, but by the very legacy she fears to claim. A small fire, a source of heat for her but a beacon for unsavoury characters. That is all took for the nightmare to come back. That once locked part now pulsates. A warning perhaps or a sign of evolving. She seeks out a wizard for her answers and instead she leaves with more questions and uncertainties. She offers her help when asked, a small thing for a dear friend... Oh how she regrets that. Dwarves! Dragons! Wargs! She did not agree with this. She did not agree with it at all! Amongst, verbally combating with dwarves, playing therapist to an emotionally compromised hobbit, refraining from pushing an annoyingly vague wizard; she finds the past does not remain there.
