The Dixon family never had a normal childhood, their mother was more into smoking then them and their father was always off with some new girl if he wasn't there beating them into the hunters he wanted them to be.

Which is why when Katniss was born, he wasn't a loving father, he trained her to be a soldier like he was cause that's all he knew, so when the dead came back to life and started killing the living, she was prepared.

But Carl Grimes, the son of a sheriffs deputy and a housewife wasn't, which was why when he met her he had a crush on her, wanting to protect her and Katniss wanted to protect him.

Cause through all the death and carnage that was the world that they were growing up in they wanted to keep each other safe.
