Set in a universe that closely resembles our own, In the Shadow of Yggdrasil was inspired by G.K.’s love of Nordic mythology (when she was eight, she tried to convince the school library she was more than old enough to read the Elder and Prose Eddas) and her admiration for Marvel’s Avengers (comics and movies).
