Sixteen year-old Jade Andrews never wanted to move to Fairview - a quiet, gray town where the houses all look the same and secrets hang heavier than the rain. With her abusive, alcoholic stepfather as the only person waiting for her at home, Jade learns early that safety doesn't exist - not in her house, and not in her own skin. She's small, just 4'10", with long brown hair and deep brown eyes that have learned how to avoid attention. But on her first day at Fairview High, attention finds her anyway. It starts with laughter. A shoulder check. A whispered insult. Then comes Hunter Lockwood - the school's rugby captain. Six foot five, blonde hair, aqua-blue eyes, and a calm, predatory confidence that makes everyone else follow his lead. Along with his friends - Noah, Xavier, Zach, and Luke - Hunter rules the halls with charm and cruelty in equal measure. To them, Jade is just a new game. To Jade, they're the reason she starts walking faster every morning and sleeping less every night. But beneath Fairview's perfect surface, something darker is brewing - and the line between victim and villain begins to blur. Because sometimes, the quietest person in the room is the one who finally breaks.
