Laika was never supposed to come back. That was the contract she signed without knowing, that she'd die for the ego-- sorry, the "betterment" of humanity.
And this Laika knew that. That's why Laika is... Laika. Sailing the void, jumping through countless wormholes on a four-and-a-half person crew sent out to find the center of the universe and survey potential colonies on the way.
So when Laika's broken eye starts aching more, starts summoning nightmares from painful memories so strong they threaten the rest of the crew, there's really only one choice to make:
To follow the event horizon.
After all, Laika was never supposed to come back.
A story about seeking purpose, facing the past, and accepting the inevitable.
Oh and, finding the center of everything, I suppose.
