She lifts my chin so our eyes meet.
"I don't wanna fall in love again," I whisper, my voice shaking.
"Why?" she breathes, eyes searching mine.
I stay quiet for a moment.
Then finally, softly:
"Because you still love me," I say. "And I see it, B. Don't deny it."
I take her hands gently.
She drops her gaze, and a tear falls straight onto my fingers.
"Just admit you still love me," I whisper again.
"Billie... this isn't about me. It's about you. I want you to move on and let someone love you."
"No," I whisper.
She shakes her head quickly.
"I don't deserve you."
"Why? 'Cause I'm famous?" I ask.
She lets out a shaky laugh.
"I've dated the famous you."
"'Cause I'm weak?" I ask again.
She grabs my hand tighter, pulling it onto her lap.
"Hey, no... you-"
She stops, breathing hard, eyes locked on mine.
"I'm just... I'm fucked up, Billie. You have no idea." Her voice cracks. "I'm a bad person. I killed. I robbed. I betrayed you-"
"You never betrayed me," I cut her off immediately.
She shakes her head like she can't even hear me.
"I wouldn't want someone I love to date someone like me. I'm scary."
"I'm scary," she repeats, quieter... like she's confessing something poisonous.
Like she's warning me.
Like she honestly thinks I should run.
But I don't move.
I don't even blink.
"Then why," I whisper, leaning in just slightly, "why do I feel safer with you than with anyone else?"
