Hemlock Potter was done fighting. The Second Wizarding War was over, Voldemort had been defeated, and she could finally live her life without constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop or for another attack to pop up out of nowhere, but she felt she was at an impasse. Her godson, Teddy Lupin, was living with his maternal grandmother, Andromeda Tonks, and her best friends were moving on from the trauma of their school years with each other. Hemlock felt more alone than ever.
It was when she was visiting Gringotts for the first time since escaping on the back of a stolen dragon (and paying off the little buggers for breaking into their bank and maybe, kind of, smashing through their floor on the back of said dragon) that she learned she had more family in the States. It turned out her mother had two half-sisters in Virginia, some nowhere town called Mystic Falls. So, she packed her bags and moved across the pond, hoping the relatives that didn't know that she existed wouldn't turn her away, because as far as she was concerned, this was her last chance to have a relationship with her blood family since she was not planning on ever seeing or speaking to Vernon or Petunia ever again.
Elsewhere, at Hogwarts somewhere in the Scottish Highlands, in 1977, a group of murderous vampires, Originals, werewolves, doppelgangers, wiccan witches, humans, and everything in-between are dumped in a flash of light in the Great Hall from late August 2009.
In short, they're told to watch the future, so that they might change things for the better for Fate's Chosen and Death's Mistress.
