The only thing Rhen knew of her father was that he had been a soldier. The temple her mother had served was a common pilgrimage site for those who lived by the sword - a place for refuge and comfort in times of war. His legion had taken residence there for a month, seeking protection by isolation while plague ravaged the outside world. Rhen's parents had met in secret almost every night, both of them disobeying their vows and neither of them caring. Her father was long gone by the time Rhen was born. It was unlikely he would ever know she existed. She remembered her mother like a dream. Of some details she was quite sure - her pale yellow hair, the scent of sage and other herbs, the tattooed symbols on the backs of her hands marking her rank and title as servant to her goddess and prisoner to her superiors. Other details avoided her like wisps of smoke - what she wore, the sound of her voice, even her face. What she remembered most were the priests who killed her. Worlds. It's something that no one questions, where they're from, that is. They all think that they are all from earth, but Kila knows better. Not the kind born from monsters or magic, but the kind born from people. Much of what you'll read is inspired by things I have lived through, things I have seen, and things I wish were not part of the real world. I write about cruelty because I know what it feels like to be powerless. I write about control because I know what it is to be silenced. I write about trauma because I know how long it clings to the skin and reshapes the bones beneath. And I write about survival because I learned it the hard way. In this book, the violence is not pretty. It is not heroic. It is not there to entertain. It exists because there are people in life who treat others the way the villains in this story do. There are systems that grind people down. There are leaders who demand obedience through fear. There are victims who endure far more than anyone should. I wanted to write a story that does not flinch away from that reality. I also wanted to write a story about what comes after. About the moment a person realizes the cage they were forced into is not the end of their story. About the slow return of self. About finding strength in places where only numbness lived.
