Elena and Jeremy had been in New Mexico for an entire year. They needed to get away from the supernatural forces that had ruined her lives, and attempt to find some form of peace in their internal chaos. Jeremy didn't have it in himself to see Bonnie again, knowing that she had found someone else, and Elena's love for the Salvatore brothers had faded, leaving her with constant guilt she simply couldn't face.
Rebekah and Elijah had been tasked with finding an amulet that could save the life of their niece, before her imminent death on the night of the full moon. When at the top of a New Mexican mesa, the Original vampires are met with werewolves who wish to stop them from retrieving the talisman. The fight ends with a discovery that would change their paths forever.
