Racetrack Higgins is many things: a newsie, a gambler, witty, and smart. And he also wasn't born a boy. He can count the number of people who know that fun fact on one hand. It's a struggle to live as a boy while trying to make sure no one knows where he came from. Luckily, he has Jack to help him--a guy who wasn't born a guy, just like him.
