Celeste Duvall, a fiercely independent Creole pianist, runs her speakeasy, The Red Drum, by the Axeman's rule. The music is her shield, her business, and the constant, intoxicating rhythm that drowns out the trauma of her past. She refuses to be a victim, but the killer's shadow is growing closer.

When the Axeman strikes just blocks from her club, Celeste's life collides with that of Detective Elias Virelli. A brooding, war-scarred Italian-American cop, Elias is obsessed with the case and instantly suspicious of the guarded woman who runs the city's loudest haven. He sees her as a prime suspect-or a target-but he can't deny the powerful, dangerous rhythm that pulls them together.

As bodies stack up and the city descends into panic, Celeste and Elias must work in the shadows to unmask the killer. But the Axeman isn't choosing victims at random. He's hunting a secret linked to an old score, a secret Celeste may be desperately trying to forget.
