They have their own pantheon, with Vought International as their Olympus and Homelander as their tyrannical, smiling Zeus. They have the adoration of mortals, the sheen of celebrity, and the same rotten core. They're just as petty, just as cruel, and somehow, even more pathetic. At least my family never needed a marketing team.
I'd been keeping my head down, my powers on a low hum, just trying to live a quiet life. But the Fates have a sick sense of humor, no matter what universe you're in.
They sent her to my door on a rain-lashed Tuesday night. Starlight. Her golden costume was torn, her face a mask of fear and defiance. She was a flicker of something real in their plastic pantheon, and that made her a target.
She stumbled into my aquarium, the door chiming a cheerful bell that was utterly betrayed by the storm in her eyes.
"Help me," she breathed, just as the first news chopper spotlight sliced through the window, painting us both in stark, unforgiving light.
From the sky, a voice boomed, amplified and dripping with faux concern. "Annie? Sweetheart? You've had us all so worried. Come out now, and let's not bother this nice... civilian."
It was Homelander. And his smile was the most terrifying thing I'd seen since the pit of Tartarus.
I looked at Starlight, then at the water in the massive saltwater tank behind me. It was sloshing violently, responding to my pulse. I'd promised myself I was done with wars. Done with gods.
But some bastards just can't take a hint.
