Every month, the Australian Writers' Centre releases a challenge: write a complete story in just 500 words, inspired by a unique set of prompts. Half a Thousand Words is my collection of those stories - written in quick bursts of inspiration, constraint, and caffeine.
Each piece began as a race against the clock but became something more: a glimpse into people caught mid-moment, emotions that flicker and fade, and the strange beauty of saying everything with almost nothing. These are the stories that surprised me, stayed with me, and proved that even in half a thousand words, a world can unfold.
A writing challenge compiled into a short story collection.
Once a month, I pick a set of three words suggested by a reader to produce a story. These are the 12 stories of 2017.
