Job prospects are dire in Britain in the early ‘90s for philosophy graduates with third class degrees. Filled with romantic ideas but no relevant experience, Robert therefore heads to France to teach English in a language school.
It is owned by a small-time wheeler-dealer who spends most of its income on gambling and womanising before turning to more illicit practices.
Robert unwittingly gets caught up in the illegal plot and gets an attractive French student, Florence, involved just as he is finally managing to win her affections.
