Bases and Pink Jackets

It's the summer of 1962, and fourteen-year-old Lenore Dove and her thirteen-year-old best friend Maude Ivory are trying to live free-away from the strict walls of the girls' home they ran from. Now under the watchful but loving eye of twenty-one-year-old Olivia Valdovinos, they're determined to stay out of trouble and prove they can make it on their own.

But that promise doesn't last long. After a scuffle at the corner shop gets the attention of a rowdy group of boys from the sandlot, Lenore and Maude find themselves pulled into a whirlwind of scraped knees, late-night bonfires, and baseball games under the stars. Between Benny's bright smile and Yeah-Yeah's endless jokes, summer turns into something golden-something neither girl thought she'd ever have.

As the season stretches on, the girls learn that home isn't always a place you run from-it's the people who show up, time and time again, even when the world says they shouldn't.
