After a pause, Serena spoke again, her voice gentler. "I noticed the room I was assigned is... right next to yours." His fork paused mid-air. "I was wondering if that could be changed," she continued quickly. "It's a beautiful room, don't get me wrong. But I don't want the rest of the staff thinking I'm being... favored. It wouldn't be fair to them." Sylus's gaze rose to meet hers. And this time, he didn't look away. "My staff is chosen carefully," he said, his voice firmer now. "They are professionals. No one will question your position. And if anyone crosses a line-" He leaned in slightly, his stare cool but edged with something heavier. "-I will take care of it. Personally." The finality in his tone silenced her. It wasn't threatening - it was protective. And somehow, that was more disarming than if he'd raised his voice. There was no negotiation in his words. No room to move.
