On June 21st, 1899, a mysterious virus swept across the United States - a strange mutation of influenza that soon became something far darker. The infection began with a fever, but it quickly twisted its victims into violent, mindless beings consumed by rage. The people called it the Zombie Plague.
Weeks later, on July 5th, hope flickered when officials announced that Mexican scientists had discovered a cure. Survivors were urged to make the perilous journey south to the capital - but the journey was treacherous. The tracks leading there were haunted by the infected and monster. worse, many who set out were never seen again.
In one of the last fortified towns, a young survivor named Crimson is chosen to join a small band of strong, desperate souls to make the dangerous trip to Mexico. But as the group faces horrors both human and inhuman along the way, secrets begin to surface - and Crimson's own hidden truth could mean salvation... or doom.
Will they survive the journey down the deadly tracks? Will they find allies - or enemies - in the ruins of a fallen nation? And can Crimson keep his secret long enough to reach Mexico?

This is a second view point from my original story - A Different Virus - Heartfire. I highly advise reading the original book first. Intro: Laura was a happy child without a care in the world. She loved her parents and life was perfect. Nothing seemed like it could go wrong. People started talking about a bad flu that was spreading and sending some into a coma. Should she call out or remain silent? (Completed) A small town in Nevada has a problem: Overnight, they have been overrun by a zombie plague that has wiped out all the citizens. A group of Cowboys set to work to make sure the outbreak doesn't get farther than the town. Can they do it? Or will they only be prey to something bigger than Nevada itself? This is a short story, I probably won't update this again, also this is a mature book, and yes, this is a disclaimer. Obviously, when a flesh-eating parasitical virus was found, scientists in all their glory decided to study it, which led to the greatest calamity in human history. Warning: This is the original book 1, it is now considered more of a prelude/building character relationships arc than a book. This provides backstory and sets the foundation for the characters and their relationships. Violent, not only violent human but a brainless one who will just chase another to eat their flesh. Eating a human flesh is their needs to satisfy their hunger. A virus spread throughout the whole world without anyone realizing until it was too late. People were turning into zombies, flesh-eating human corpses. The government desperate for salvation opened its hidden bunkers. Some fled to other countries for a higher chance of safety. Some died on the way to those said bunkers. Some turned to those creatures they were running from. Those who are lucky and rich enough to enter the bunkers are now momentarily safe and hidden wherever those bunkers are. But it's only a matter of time before those bunkers break. While many were left outside, fighting for their lives and trying to survive, they were sleeping in comfort inside those metal havens. Unbeknownst to those who were safely enjoying themselves inside, there was something more outside, waiting for the bunkers to open. Ziya, who wanted to find her sisters, started to travel. At first, she was alone until a few people found her and became her companions while traveling the dangerous highways. How they manage to trust her despite being aloof, she doesn't know. But they knew she was a great help to them. With her unnatural instinct and calmness while fighting the zombies despite being half blind she was pretty useful to let her go. They kept asking other questions but eventually stopped when they realised they won't receive answers anytime soon. They were just letting her join them because she's useful and they felt guilty leaving her alone. To her defense, she doesn't trust them, and she doesn't want them to trust her. She thinks they're a bit stupid for letting her join but staying quiet about it. She just wanted to stay alive and find her sisters. That is until she crosses paths with Nate and his daughter, Emmi. Emmi is not and cannot be vaccinated against the disease, so the only way to protect her and give her some kind of life is to reunite her with her estranged mother in a quarantine zone on the other side of the country. Charlotte wants nothing to do with Nate or the girl who looks like her dead sister. She does not want to go through the grief of losing people again if something bad was to happen. And something bad does happen when Emmi is kidnapped, and it is no one's fault but Charlotte's. Through this obligation alone, Charlotte feels like it is her responsibility to get Emmi back, to right her wrong. In helping Nate pursue his kidnapped daughter, Charlotte inadvertently allows herself to feel again, to care for those other than herself. But with the clock ticking, Charlotte's new found family may just end up like her own, dead and destroyed, if Emmi is exposed to the disease that her father tried so hard to protect her from.Complete
