The life of Akira Kimura can be summarized with one word: linear. This is true for the first 17 years, but at the dawn of his 18th he is on the cusp of change. What form does this change come in? A new girl, Atsuko, starting her first semester at Akira's highschool. Silent, introverted, and with only an interest in reading, one can see her immediate outer self and draw a grim conclusion, but one day, after what was supposed to be a dare, Akira shows interest in being her friend; her only friend.
Yet in spite of his interest a roadblock exists, Atsuko's enigmatic personality radiates no clue as to where to begin, but one trait slipped by; she holds an unusual attachment to the romantic novel "Driftwood". As their stories unfurl the paths they take in life follow a near identical pattern to that of the book, but how does this book end?
