You've never made things easy for Steve Rogers.

Soft-hearted but battle-born, brave enough to run into danger but guarded enough to never let anyone too close-you're a contradiction he's never been able to figure out.
Your cold exterior frustrates him.
Your stubbornness challenges him.
Your quiet strength draws him in more than he'd ever admit.

And the twelve years between you?
That's the line he refuses to cross.

But everything shatters the day an explosion traps you and Steve beneath the rubble of a collapsing facility. In the pitch-black silence-injured, pressed together, breaths mingling-your walls and his rules begin to crack. A confession almost slips out. A truth almost escapes.

Hours later, once the team drags you both into the light, nothing between you feels the same.

Now Steve is keeping his distance.
You're trying to pretend your heart didn't stutter in the dark.
And that unspoken moment sits between you like a live wire-fragile, scorching, impossible to forget.

You were enemies, rivals, opposites.
But one fracture point changed everything.

And now you're both trying desperately not to fall through it.

THIS STORY HAS MOVED TO TUMBLR! Details given in the latest update. A story in which America's favorite Captain gives a new life and family to a five-year-old girl who has suffered well beyond her years... During an intense Hydra-disassembly mission, the Avengers are able to successfully detain countless Hydra personnel, as well as several of the evil agency's test subjects. But in the midst of the harrowing scene, America's favorite Captain is asked to investigate the final holding cell in the experimentation lab. There, he finds a small child huddled fearfully in a corner with a blindfold over her eyes, a complete contrast to the other prisoners who were all super-built, raging with anger, and ready to fight. Over his earpiece, the other Avengers are able to offer Captain scrambled bits of information they've all gathered about this mysterious creature, referred to as simply "Girl." But when she's brought back to the Avenger's Headquarter's to be further investigated, he finds out that there's much more to this little girl's story than anyone had initially imagined. With the seemingly complete elimination of Hydra, the heroic group are offered more freedom and time to make real lives for themselves. But Steve Rogers has formed a soft spot for a certain fellow ex-test subject. Along with the help of his friends, will he be able to help Girl heal and find hope for her future? And what will happen when Girl's dark past attempts to catch back up with her? [Trigger warning: physical, emotional, and sexual abuse of a child.] [Spoiler alert: This fan-fiction will include many unavoidable spoilers to most of/if not all the films in the Avengers series. Read at your own discretion.] [Lowercase of titles intended.] All original writing. Steve Rogers and all other Marvel Universe content belong to their respective owners/creators.

Boom. The city of Chicago went up in flames, consumed by the nuclear bomb particles floating in the sky. It was gone in a matter of seconds. Obliterated. The screams silenced and all that could be heard was the explosion as it swept the land. The Avengers were tired. Bleeding. Lost. Torn to shreds inside with guilt. I didn't really take time to appreciate everything I had until it was gone. Now, we were on the run with nothing but each other. The government blamed us as a cover, but we carried the guilt. Not them. We tried to save the city and failed miserably. Who were the people really going to believe, though? The government who supported them through everything, or the Avengers with an old nuclear arms dealer on their team? It didn't matter anymore. We had to clear our names before Loki got out of hand. The worst part? He's gathered a team. The best part? We have something he doesn't. Determination to avenge the fallen. Book 2 of 3 *I do not own anything Marvel, except for two characters, some villains, and the plot. Please enjoy! *Cover by the amazing @-verdant-!
