Magnus Bane had learned long ago that the world could be merciless, even to those who navigated the delicate balance between light and darkness. Yet, he never expected to discover cruelty presented so neatly. A weathered pine crate, stamped with the logo of an unremarkable shipping company, stood out starkly against the cold, concrete floor of the echoing bay in a dimly lit warehouse. The air was thick with the scent of something rotting, and the distant sound of water dripping added an unsettling rhythm, heightening his anxiety. It looked like every other box stacked in the cavernous room, except that this one whispered his husband's name every time Magnus let his palm glide a few inches over its lid.
"Alec," the warlock breathed, voice cracking in the cold. The dust on top of the pine crate trembled visibly as he said his name aloud.

Magnus narrowed his eyes. "You're using your concerned voice, which I hate." "You're getting a partner." Magnus sat up straight. "What the fuck, Ragnor?" "I know, I know," Ragnor said, holding up a hand. "Just hear me out. He's transferred from Los Angeles and nearly got himself fired. His father's an old friend of mine - Capt. Lightwood. I've known the kid since he was in diapers. He's a good cop. Smart. Passionate. But... a bit of a loose cannon. Kind of like someone else I know, back when they used to wear more eyeliner than sense." *** The first week had been... rough. They were both stubborn, with completely different work ethics, which had left its mark on their first days together. On top of that, Magnus was still upset about having cut his vacation short. They started with easy jobs - like the occasional drunk who thought urinating in a public fountain was a protest against capitalism. Magnus breezed through the days with detours into half the bars and cafés in the borough, calling them "informant check-ins." Alec called them "wasting police resources" under his breath. The second week was a tiny bit better. By the third week, they even laughed. Alec is closeted from his family and has a lot of anxiety because of it. He's in love with a certain beautiful warlock and really doesn't want to worry him with his problems. He's hiding his sexuality from his family. He's hiding his anxiety from his boyfriend. Altogether he's just tired of hiding. What happens when Magnus introduces him to a mundane game called Truth or Dare on a rather romantic date together. What would happen if the only way to save Magnus was to do something he really was avoiding. Also lots of fluff, no serious smut though. It's Friday the 13th. Magnus is late for work. Again because of his cat. He's locking up his apartment when he gets a phone call that he's been fired. Alec was supposed to move into his new apartment that day, but the landlord left him the wrong key. Alec has been sitting on the stairs outside the apartment for an hour and a half. This is the moment when their paths cross. NOTE: So it all started when I saw this picture. I immediately put aside the other 2 stories I was writing, and started this one.
