We turned 25 last summer, my brother and I.
Mum said it was a big deal to turn a quarter of a century. 'Forget about sweet sixteen and your twenty-first!' she'd tell us all the time, 'At twenty-five is when true freedom comes to get you!' As I got older, that promise began to sound more like a threat, and suddenly, twenty-five had come, and Mum said she would give us anything we asked for. My brother asked for a car.
I told them I wanted to move out.
