WHERE THE WATERMELONS ROT - STRANGER THINGS

- WESLEY "WES" ANDERSON HAS LEARNED TO THROW A MEAN RIGHT HOOK. His brother had always been one to pick fights, so when the bullying ramped up last year, Wes had asked him to teach him how to fight. Over the Summer of 1983, every day the two boys brawled it out until the younger got it. The violet bruises on Wes' skin hurt after taking dozens of falls, but they were worth it. He wore them like a badge of honor.

While he loved playfighting with his brother, the highlight of his summer was always spent with his friends, Lucas, Will, Dustin, and Mike in Mike's basement. They played Dungeons and Dragons for hours, and their parents' attempts to get them to play outside like normal kids their age proved futile.

In Mike's basement, he wasn't Wes anymore. He was Ulrich, a seven-foot-tall Half Orc fighter, intimidating foes wherever he went.

October 23rd, 1983, is the first time Wes gets to prove himself in a fight that's not with his brother. His arm winds up and his fist cracks against Troy Walsh's nose, scarlet liquid pouring from the bully's nostrils as he starts to cry.

Wesley Anderson gets suspended for two weeks. His parents ground him for two more, but he finds he doesn't care.

There's something that feels like hope stirring in his chest. There's something that feels good about taking power from someone who made him feel so afraid over the last year.

November 7th, 1983, Wesley Anderson's hope dies in his chest.

William Byers, his best friend, is missing.
