A story based on the 1977-83 British TV series The Professionals.
During a tense CI5 operation, agents Bodie and Doyle are assigned to surveil a dangerous criminal known to be hiding out in a quiet suburban street. They set up inside an empty house directly opposite his home, monitoring him with advanced surveillance equipment and listening devices.
As the hours pass, Ray Doyle picks up a faint but distressing sound through the audio feed-whimpering, crying, and small noises that don't match the voice of their suspect. Listening more closely, Doyle realises there is a young child in the house. The child sounds frightened, distressed, and possibly in danger.
Doyle studies the audio and concludes that the little girl is not responding to shouting or other loud noises. She may not be able to hear them-suggesting she is deaf or partially deaf. Now the case isn't just about apprehending a criminal; it's about safeguarding a vulnerable child trapped inside with him.
Once CI5 has gathered enough evidence, Cowley authorises the arrest. Bodie storms in to subdue the suspect while Doyle immediately searches the house for the child. He finds her hiding, terrified, wearing hearing aids and struggling to understand what's happening. Doyle kneels down, softens his expression, and uses gentle gestures and calm reassurance to gain her trust.
Over the following weeks, Doyle visits Ellie often. She responds to his patience, compassion, and willingness to meet her on her terms. Slowly, she comes out of her shell.
Doyle, who never pictured himself as a father, realises Ellie has come to depend on him- and that he cannot walk away. In a decision that surprises even him, he chooses to adopt her, giving Ellie the safety, family, and future she had been denied.
To the world he was a beast but for her he would do anything.
He could have the world but all he wanted was her.
They say the things we want most are the things we can't have.
For she was so afraid of him that even the thought of him could have her running for the hills.
Little did she know that she was the only one who didn't have to be afraid of him.
