The year is 2350. The Golden Age of Kirk is history; the generation of Picard has yet to arrive. In this silent, dangerous era, the Federation frontier is held together by grit, diplomacy, and phaser fire.
Captain Edward Jellico is a man of absolute order. Freshly promoted and armed with a mandate to stabilize a bleeding sector, he takes command of Starbase 412-a scarred, fortified bastion known as Sentinel Station. But Jellico's rigid adherence to Starfleet protocol immediately clashes with a crew used to the chaotic rhythms of the frontier, led by his charismatic but loose-cannon Executive Officer, Commander Jack Riley.
Jellico barely has time to inspect the station before the crisis strikes. The science vessel U.S.S. Copernicus is obliterated, and a Cardassian colony is wiped from existence, leaving no survivors. With the Cardassian Union demanding blood and a massive warship parked off his bow, Jellico is forced into an impossible alliance with the cunning Gul Evek to find the true culprits.
With only forty-eight hours to prevent an interstellar war, Jellico must lead the U.S.S. Sentinel into enemy territory to hunt a phantom enemy. But as the investigation uncovers false flags, ancient Romulan signatures, and Tzenkethi raiders, Jellico realizes the true threat isn't on the other side of the border-it is waiting for him back on his own station.
