Melly Gonzalez pours her whole heart into rescuing Chicago's forgotten dogs-even if her cranky next-door neighbor seems determined to make this Christmas her worst yet.

As the owner of South Side Paws Rescue in Canaryville, Melly devotes her life to rehabilitating misunderstood pups. Her newest rescue, Tommy, a wiggly pitbull puppy named after the Chicago Blackhawks mascot, is sweet, eager, and still learning his manners. But her neighbor insists he's "dangerous" and won't stop filing reports to Animal Control and the police.

When Detective Adam Ruzek from the Chicago PD Intelligence Unit responds to the call, he expects a problem.
What he finds is a flustered but fiercely capable woman, a shy puppy peeking from behind her legs, and a whole binder of vaccination records, behavioral notes, and training plans that prove she's doing everything right.

And somehow, Adam always ends up being the one dispatched to her address.

As Melly fights to prove Tommy is harmless, Adam becomes her quiet protector-coaching her through hearings, calming her fears, and showing up for her rescue's holiday events.
