In a small, underfunded Philadelphia school, Ms. Chavendez teaches art the way some people breathe, sometimes messy and other times balanced. Her classroom is a refuge of warm light, mismatched paintbrushes, and relaxation from the outside world for her kids. It's where they come to rest their heads, and where she remembers how to stay whole.

Between budget cuts, too-loud hallways, and a principal who makes everything harder than it needs to be, she keeps showing up with paint-stained hands and her heart on her sleeve.
