This short story follows a narrator whose memories are fragmented and unreliable, stretching between eons of shadowed past and a formless, drifting present, all stemming from the discovery of a decaying, ancient book found in a dim, endless library near a mist-shrouded black river-a tome containing the name Golcothoth, a glowing, indescribable entity described as both the Door and the Key to the Ultimate Door, the heart of the Box of Everything that birthed the Primordial Void, the Higher Vastness, and the slumbering god Northelaphor, alongside a forbidden ritual passed down through terrifyingly old uncial script that grants passage beyond the boundaries of ordinary reality; after reading the incantations within the book, the narrator begins crossing dimensional gateways, forever shattering their perception of time, space, and the familiar world around them, acquiring an ominous shadow that follows them always, and eventually traveling through vast, starry voids to behold the twisted, alien towers of the Strange World before being cast back to their attic, left with a profound, lingering terror of the outer gulfs they dared to approach.
