Across the territories, instability grips all four Clans as a hidden rogue faction quietly orchestrates chaos. PineClan, already shaken after rescuing the kittypet Patches, suffers a deadly fox attack secretly lured in by the rogues; in the aftermath, paranoia grows and Patches is wrongly exiled, deepening the Clan's mistrust. CliffClan, where Patches later finds refuge with the grieving medicine cat Mudthroat, is struck by a devastating flood that destroys dens and scatters prey, yet the Clan chooses compassion and allows her to stay as an apprentice. Meanwhile, DustClan is ravaged by a sudden wildfire-set indirectly by the rogues but patches present to the entire land is blamed-forcing the Clan to relocate and leaving them vulnerable to outside manipulation. In ThistleClan, prey mysteriously vanishes as the rogues overhunt the marshes, pushing the Clan into starvation and making them increasingly desperate and volatile. As tensions rise and each Clan believes another is responsible for their suffering, the rogues prepare to push all four territories into all-out war-while the apprentices' dreams and Mudthroat's grief-stricken prophecy hint that only by uncovering the truth behind Patches' exile can the Clans avoid total destruction.
