Calm. Unhurried.

Not loud. Not angry. Certain.
She stumbled, fear choking her.
"Please-"
"Run," he interrupted softly.
"Every second you take from me, I take back elsewhere."
She knew better than to ask where.
Or from whom.
Her feet slowed. Not because she was tired-
but because she understood.
He stepped out of the darkness when she finally fell. Blood, dirt, torn fabric. He looked at her the way one looks at something that tried to break and failed.
He crouched, close enough for her to hear him breathe.
"I warned you," he said quietly.
"Freedom always costs more than you can afford."
No threat.
No promise.
