Adam lives in New York with his husband Jack and their children as well their dog Scooby. Adam is a special victim's detective. He love his job so much, because he's able to bring justice to the vitcims. Even though he love his job, it can be quite emotional and difficult, especially when a child is abused or when a school shooting happen.

Adam is worried about his and Jack's daughter Esme. She doesn't have many friends at her preschool. She mostly keeps to herself. But one afternoon Esme tells him she has a friend named Laughing Jack. Adam thinks it's just a imaginary friend, but he's happy for her. But what happens when this imaginary friend turns out to be a killer clown who kills children and fills their stomachs with candy.
