Max was never nice to Charles, Charles tried to be nice to him in the beginning. Until he just... gave up.
So they fought, physically, mentally and wayyy to much for their team principals liking. After a certain inchident they have to spend much more time with each other, they have to be able to behave "civil" around each other.
Somehow they started to become a little more than civil. With lots of problems and the media speculating that there may be something more behind closed doors, they don't know what to think about each other anymore.
