"She doesn't want to go," Rafe seethed. "You're killing her." "She doesn't get a choice," I said. Rafe snapped. She launched at me, fists flying. Her knuckles cracked against my jaw-white flash-another punch-blood filled my mouth. Guards rushed in. "Commander-!" "NO!" I rasped. "Stand down." Rafe hit me again. And again. Bone cracked. My ribs screamed. But I didn't lift a hand to stop her. "You don't get to take her from me!" Rafe cried, voice breaking as she slammed me into the desk. "She's my-" She cut herself off. My heart splintered. "She's everything to you," I whispered. "I know." Rafe's voice shattered. "You're sending her away to die." "No." I swallowed blood. "I'm sending her away to LIVE." Her fist trembled in the air. Then she hit me again anyway, sobbing now. "She won't forgive you." "I know." "You're BREAKING her." "I KNOW!" I screamed back. "I'm breaking YOU, too!" Her grip loosened. And for the first time- Rafe collapsed against me, shaking with grief. "I love her," she whispered. "I know," I whispered. "That's why you have to let her go."
