Kaia Cooper spent most of high school slipping past the spotlight. People called her pretty, but she never cared about being one of the "populars". She liked her quiet corner, her tight circle of friends, and the comfort of being seen for who she was instead of how she looked.

Still, a girl can nurse a harmless crush. And Kaia's had always been the same: Steve Harrington. King Steve. The guy everyone noticed. He only ever looked her way during exams, usually when he was trying to peek at her answers. After he graduated, Kaia figured the crush would fade. It had to. He was older, out in the real world, and still tangled up in old feelings for Nancy Wheeler.
