My tired body sways like damp washing as I stumble down the rocky path, returned to my original route at last. My lower lip wobbles dangerously until I catch it between fingers which are slippery with blood.
All those times in the past when I didn't cry, and now a sodding can of Diet Coke...
Tears glide to my chin. At least the others are far enough away now that they won't see my hands furiously wiping.
It's even darker down here between the trees. Colder too. The scents of moss and damp leaves hang musty and heavy. My feet get stupid, stumbling on hidden bumps. Spacey-headed, I feel my way along a fallen tree trunk and then lower myself gently down. This close, the trunk smells sweet and ancient, as if it's only just started rotting.
Before I close my eyes, a concerned inner voice softly reminds me, Maybe not the best idea to sleep so soon after a head injury.
