After escaping the Crystal Gems and crash-landing on Earth, Lapis stumbles onto a strange island hiding fragile, glowing moth-like creatures created from loose Gem shards. Recognizing their pain, she quietly vows to keep them safe-hiding them inside the old barn she later shares with Peridot.

While Peridot is distracted with her own Earth projects, Lapis secretly cares for the shard-moths, feeding them or try to, calming them when they panic, and protecting them from being discovered. She never tells Peridot what they really are, afraid Peri might report them or accidentally hurt them.
