The worst fears of a modernised, ingenious world come to life. Militarised police trudged through streets polluted with fear and those who tried to run. The first moment it came to light was when I was in school. I got asked out by a boy, and that boy turned out to be Robbie Nelson. The disease wasn't just one thing; the very thing they wanted to destroy was democracy and opinion, freedom and complete liberty. This world was governed by people under an authoritarian rule, and was the very reason why those who survived in cities and not under mountains of rock had to breathe under orange skies and soul-crushing rules. This was what the world turned into in a matter of days, and who or what made it happen...I knew. I knew everything. And that was all because of Robbie Nelson.

After fleeing her abusive ex in the middle of the night, Chloe Dawson arrives in a small coastal town with nothing but a duffel bag, a crying six-month-old baby, and the last of her savings. She rents a tiny apartment where the walls are paper-thin. Next door lives Sergeant Mason Kane, disciplined, exhausted, emotionally closed off, and currently on leave between military assignments. After years in the army, silence is the only thing that helps him sleep. Then the baby starts crying every night. At first, Mason is irritated. Chloe is terrified of him. Every knock on the door reminds her of the man she escaped.
