He pressed his palm against the cold glass, feeling nothing. The chill that would make a human shiver barely registered against his marble-cold skin. Everything barely registered anymore. Food held no appeal beyond the necessary sustenance of blood. Music, which had once moved him to tears in his human life, now sounded like empty noise. Art, literature, travel-he had exhausted every possible distraction the world had to offer, and still, the hollowness remained.
"You're brooding again," came a voice from behind him.
Lucian didn't turn. He recognized the melodic lilt of Sera, his coven sister and one of the few vampires he could tolerate for extended periods. She had found her mate two centuries ago-a human woman she had turned, and they lived in such nauseating bliss that Lucian could barely stand to visit their home.
"I'm contemplating," he corrected, his voice a low rumble that seemed to emanate from somewhere deep in his chest.
"Contemplating, brooding-it's all the same when you've been doing it for three centuries." Sera moved to stand beside him, her reflection appearing in the glass like a ghost. She was beautiful, as all vampires were, with cascading auburn hair and eyes like liquid amber. But she wasn't his, and he wasn't hers, and that was all that mattered.
