June Liu, raised in a strict family, is always pushing herself beyond her limits, and she's just about at her breaking point. She's juggling volleyball with some of the hardest classes offered at Van Cleren University, but it still never seems to satisfy her need to be the best in everything she does.

Cato Kingston didn't go up like most kids. Both of his parents were shot in his childhood neighborhood, causing him to have to move in with his uncle and cousins. To say that the event marked a shift in Cato would be an understatement. Since then, no one has been able to bring his spark back... unless?

After an unlikely encounter in June's freshman year, the two became best friends despite their vastly different personalities. Fast forward a year, and Cato's band starts to gain interest. Cato was never a fan of the spotlight, but it always seems to find him, no matter how hard he tries to hide from it. If girls weren't falling at his feet before (which they were), they sure are now that he is well known even outside of Van Cleren. June tries to tell herself that it's no big deal, that she's happy for him. The fact is... June lies to herself a lot.
