"You should've left me," I say sheepishly. "I didn't want to." They taught her to obey. They never taught her to question. Saoirse has spent her entire life inside a government facility where every moment is controlled, every thought monitored, and every child is tested for something they call a disease. She's never known anything different-and she's never had a reason to doubt it. Until something goes wrong. When an escape attempt ends in tragedy, Saoirse begins to see cracks in the world she was raised to trust. Memories don't line up, rules stop making sense. And the people in charge seem more interested in controlling her than protecting her. When she finally breaks free, she expects freedom beyond the facility walls. Instead, she finds a world just as controlled-and far more dangerous. Hunted by the government and haunted by a past she can't fully remember, Saoirse is forced to rely on Zaid, a stranger with abilities that feel all too familiar-and a presence that unsettles her in ways she doesn't understand. He sees through her defenses too easily, challenges everything she's been taught, and stays when everyone else would have walked away. The closer they get to safety, the closer he gets to her-and for the first time, Saoirse begins to want something she was never meant to have. But in a world where attachment is a weakness and trust can be used against you, letting him in might be the most dangerous choice she's ever made. As they travel across a fractured country toward a hidden sanctuary, the line between truth and manipulation begins to blur-and so does the line between survival and surrender. Because some things aren't meant to escape. And some people are worth risking everything for.
