ENEMIES UNDER COVER

"You fucking ruined it Noah" He screamed closing his fists with anger, his jaw clenched.

His voice is dangerous, the kind that crawls under your skin instead of raising it.

I don't look at him. I keep my eyes on the case file, thumb tapping the photo.
"It's funny," I say "Last time I checked, I wasn't the one who almost blew our cover."

He steps closer. Too close. I can feel his presence before I smell the faint smoke and coffee clinging to him.

"Think you're a tough girl, huh. You keep pushing," he murmurs, stepping closer, "and you're going to get yourself hurt."

That's when I finally look up. Smile slow. Sharp.
"Is that a threat, partner?" I ask. "Or are you just mad I don't scare easy?"

His jaw tightens. A flash of something dark passes through his eyes - not anger. Something worse.

"Careful, Noah," he says quietly, towering over me as his hands stood by my sides, on the table behind me. "You are starting to look like you like this."

I tilt my head, unfazed.
"Like what, may I ask." I whisper.

"Me," He said closing the gap between us "being this close to you"
