Christmas. The Dolomites. Snowflakes drifted from the evergreen boughs to settle on hair, while the fresh white blanket crunched beneath every footfall. The river's current grew lethargic, the wind died down, and the world, for a heartbeat, stood still. Families gathered around the tree, their disputes silenced for a fleeting moment, save for one. Upon the gravel road, a fork emerged. The second path - the one crushed and disturbed - was the trail where Alex dragged his body across the earth, inching his way toward safety.
