After the late 1850s, many aristocratic and even many helpless Chinese and Japanese families migrate to Germany and other Slavic countries, but yet having pre existing hostility. In 1903, to maintain peace between two closely related aristocratic religious and militant families, the Yamamoto family which uses the German surname Schneider, and the Wang family which now uses the German surname Wagner, they arrange the marriage between Katherine Wang 'Wagner' and Louis Yamamoto 'Schneider'. It was said that they'd meet for the engagement in Christmas. The Yamamoto family initially thought of receiving Katherine well as she was a devout Christian and a member in the church who played the piano. When Katherine sees Louis for the first time, she instantly has romantic feelings for him, even though he's fourteen years older, but what Katherine doesn't know was that Louis had feelings for a Polish Japanese girl named Martha Suzuki Kowalska. They eventually get married but Louis gets very distant with her, thinking she isn't too feminine and his love for Martha lingered. Katherine also faces dejection and isolation from his family. In the meantime, she befriends a Korean girl from England, Drina Jeon.
