Trees Don’t Talk
“Trees don’t talk,” I told my aunt while walking in the woods.
“They do so talk,” she whispered, so I barely understood.
“You’re grown up, now. You know this stuff,” I griped, trudging along.
“Trees don’t just talk. They sing and shout, and dance to silly songs.”
“You’re going to have to prove this, Aunt, and you won’t fool my ears.”
“No problem. Sit down quietly. Soon, you’ll begin to hear.”
We sat down on a log nearby, and looked across the land.
Hearing a gentle whisper there, I shyly took her hand.
“You talk,” she quietly explained, with wind that’s blowing through.”
“When leaves are rustling in the trees, the wind is blowing, too.”
“Okay, but Aunt, I’m talking now to tell my thoughts to you.”
“If trees are talking all the time, who are they talking to?”
“They talk to you. They talk to me. They talk to God, above.”
They tell us of His faithfulness, and His abiding love.
Trees live and grow for many years, through seasons high and low.
They know that God remains, even as we all come and go.
So next time you are passing by as trees begin to sing,
It’s God gently reminding you to think about our King.
I wrote this for my niece before she went to preschool. She graduates next weekend, and so I'm feeling a bit nostalgic.
